E-COMMERCE & UNIT ECONOMICS • OCT 2026
One of the most common mistakes new Shopify, WooCommerce, and Cash-on-Delivery (COD) store owners make is celebrating high top-line sales revenue while quietly losing money on every order. Between product sourcing costs, packaging, courier delivery charges, payment gateway deductions, and Meta/TikTok ad spend, your real net profit can vanish if you do not track your unit economics.
Before running a single paid advertisement, calculate how much money remains from an order after all physical and transaction costs are paid:
Profit Before Ads = Selling Price - (Product Cost + Packaging & Shipping + Payment Gateway Fee)
For example, if you sell an item for $85, your product cost is $24, shipping is $7, and Stripe/Shopify takes 2.9% ($2.47), your Profit Before Ads is $51.53. That $51.53 is the absolute maximum you can spend on advertising to acquire one customer without losing money.
Ad managers on Facebook, Instagram, Google, and TikTok report campaign performance using ROAS (Revenue ÷ Ad Spend). Your Break-Even ROAS tells you the minimum multiplier required to cover product and fulfillment costs:
Break-Even ROAS = Selling Price ÷ Profit Before Ads
In the example above, $85 ÷ $51.53 = 1.65x. Any campaign delivering a ROAS higher than 1.65x is generating net profit; any campaign below 1.65x is losing money on each sale.
If you operate in markets where Cash-on-Delivery dominates (such as Pakistan, UAE, or Saudi Arabia), always add a buffer of 10% to 18% into your shipping cost field to account for uncollected parcels (Return to Origin), where the seller still pays two-way courier charges.
